Ryder Cup Team USA
The winners of the 2008 Ryder Cup, Team USA was led by captain Paul Azinger, who was himself a member of the team in 1989, 1991, 1993 and 2002. Azinger managed to turn the tide for the USA, with Team Europe having won five of the last six Ryder Cups. Azinger has won a total of 14 worldwide professional championships since becoming a Tour professional in 1981. Azinger led his team to victory at the 2008 Ryder Cup finals, with a 16½ - 11½ defeat of the European Team led by Nick Faldo.
On being invited to captain Team USA, Azinger said, "I just want to say that it is, I think, the greatest honour you can bestow on a professional golfer to ask him to captain a Ryder Cup team, and I'm awestruck by it."
In 2006, the PGA of America altered the Ryder Cup qualifying process, and Azinger was responsible for picking four rather than only two of the members of the team. The remaining members of Team USA where the eight professional golfers with the highest point ranking as of 11 August 2008.
