In 2006, the 36th Ryder Cup Matches were held on an Arnold Palmer-designed championship course – known as the Palmer Course – at the K Club in County Kildare, Ireland. Europe won the competition by 18½ points to the USA’s 9½, equalling its record winning margin of 2004.

For the European team, 2006 represented a third consecutive victory in the Ryder Cup Matches – the first time Europe has achieved this feat. Swedish Henrik Stenson, then a newcomer to the Ryder Cup Matches, made the winning putt.

2006 Teams

In 2006, Team Europe was led by captain Ian Woosnam. His picks for the team were Darren Clark and Lee Westwood. The other ten players on the team included – in order of their ranking – Luke Donald, Sergio García, Henrik Stenson, David Howell, Colin Montgomerie, Robert Karlsson, Paul Casey, Padraig Harrington, José María Olazábal and Paul McGinley.

Team USA was led by Tom Lehman, who selected Stewart Cink and Scott Verplank for the team. Other golfers on the team were the top-ranked Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Chad Campbell, David Toms, Chris DiMarco, Vaughn Taylor, JJ Henry, Zach Johnson and Brett Wetterich.
