Ryder Cup Betting Options

The Ryder Cup is one of few golf tournaments on the professional circuit that use the match play scoring system.
Other tournaments that use this system are the Accenture Match Play Championship, the biennial Presidents Cup – which is made up of teams representing America and non-European or international players, and the HSBC World Match Play Championship – an invitational event on the European Tour. Women’s professional golf held its first match play event in 2005 with the HSBC Women’s World Match Play Championship.
The match play format makes Ryder Cup betting especially exciting because it encourages more aggressive play. Unlike in stroke-play tournaments, a par is not necessarily good enough to win a hole – a small error can be disastrous. So to win matches, players are encouraged to take maximum risks.
Match play rules dictate that a running tally is kept between the two competing players on a course. At the start of a match, the scores are all "square" or equal. The score is recorded as one player takes the lead over another. Ryder Cup betting and odds can be amended from hole to hole.

Ryder Cup Betting Options

In Ryder Cup betting, you can choose to bet on the outcome of each foursome, fourball and singles match, as well as on an overall win by either the European or American team. You can also choose to wager on the performance of particular players or partnerships. You can even bet whether the 2010 Ryder Cup will yield a hole-in-one.
Some additional Ryder Cup betting options include:

  • betting on the first nine holes, the second nine, and the overall result
  • betting on "units", which are won for different feats such as closest to the pin, birdies, the longest drive and par saves from bunkers
  • betting on place finishes or score finishes, per match or overall
  • betting each way – a combination of betting on a place finish and betting to win
  • combination betting, in which you combine different types of bets and must win all the bets to earn a payout. The payout is equal to all the individual odds multiplied
