Wilson on the verge of qualifying for Ryder Cup

Oliver Wilson stands on the brink of becoming the first ever player to qualify for the European Ryder Cup team without having won a professional event in his career.

Wilson, who is currently ranked 10th in the European Ryder Cup points lists, will most likely secure a spot in the European Ryder Cup team if he manages to finish this week's Johnny Walker Championship in the top ten.

The Englishman, however, is keen to avoid earning the distinction of becoming the first ever non-winning Ryder Cup player, and will be looking to score his maiden win at the 2008 Johnny Walker Championship this week. Wilson has finished as runner up in a professional golf tournament on seven occasions.

"I'd love to be on the team no matter what, but to be on the team with a win under my belt would be fantastic. I feel I'm ready and hopefully it will be this week," said Wilson.

Should Wilson claim victory at Gleneagles he will be following in Nick Faldo's footsteps. The Ryder Cup veteran and European team captain made his Ryder Cup debut in 1977 - a month after claiming a first ever tournament title at Gleneagles.
