The United States team achieved its biggest victory in 27 years at the Ryder Cup on Sunday, denying Europe a fourth consecutive Ryder Cup title with a masterful 16.5-11.5 victory.

The Europeans started the day requiring 7 points for an unlikely win, but never looked the part of Ryder Cup champions, as they conceded further ground in the morning session.

Jim Furyk sealed the Americans' victory in the afternoon session with a two and one against Miguel Angel Jiminez at the 17th hole of the 8th singles match.

"I poured my heart and soul into this for two years," Azinger said at the post tournament award ceremony. "My players poured their heart and soul into it for a week. They deserve it. They played great."

While Azinger lapped up the praise as two years of careful preparation came to fruition, Nick Faldo was left attempting to explain why a star-studded European team had failed to fire at the Valhalla Country Club. The European captain suggested that the outcome could easily have been different.

“We are talking fractions," he said. "The games, the quality of the golf.
"We have come up short, but not in pride and spirit."
