PGA Tour to Take Break before Ryder Cup
The PGA of America has announced that the PGA Tour will take a two-week break between the BMW Championship and the TOUR Championship - the last of the four PGA playoffs. This will give US players a one-week rest before the 2008 Ryder Cup golf tournament.
The first three playoff events for the FedExCup, including the Barclays, Deutsche Bank Championship and BMW Championship, are due to be played starting from 21 August on consecutive weeks. So American players are likely to need a break in order to be at their best for the Ryder Cup golf tournament in September.
Team USA captain, Paul Azinger, welcomed the news, saying that, "Their guys (Europe) could be over at Valhalla for a week while our guys are grinding for a fifth week in a row. It's not going to hurt us."
The break is also intended to help ensure that top players don't miss any of the four PGA of America playoffs. In 2007, for example, PGA administrators were disappointed that some top players - including Tiger Woods (who anyway went on to win the FedExCup by a significant margin), Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington each missed one of the four events.
McGinley quits as Ryder Cup Team Europe Assistant
In
May of 2007, Ryder Cup Team Europe captain Nick
Faldo appointed Paul McGinley and José María Olazábal as team assistants
for the Ryder Cup golf tournament.
On the eve of the Seve Trophy - for which Faldo captained the British and Irish team - McGinley resigned from his position as vice-captain for the Ryder Cup team, saying that he'd prefer to focus on playing himself into the team instead.
Faldo said, "Good luck to him. The man holed a winning putt on the Ryder Cup and that's the sort of player I want on my team."
Faldo has yet to announce a replacement for McGinley.
Don't miss the action at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky, when the 37th Ryder Cup golf tournament is played.
