The 2008 Ryder Cup course was designed by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, and opened in 1986. It's a private, par-72, 18-hole course situated on 486 acres to the east of central Louisville.

Valhalla is consistently rated as one of the top 100 American golf courses. It hosted the 1996 and 2000 US PGA Championships, the 2002 PGA Club Professional Championship and the 2004 US Senior PGA Championship.

In 2000, the PGA of America - which had already acquired an interest in the Valhalla Golf Club - purchased the full club.

Ryder Cup Course Layout

The first and last nine holes at the 2008 Ryder Cup course differ significantly in style. The front nine are links-style, with gently contoured fairways in an open valley setting. The last nine are more traditional, and are located in higher, tree-covered terrain with a shallow creek that comes into play on four holes. Greens feature several tiers and partitions, as well as swatches of Kentucky bluegrass and fescue rough. A total of 42 sand bunkers are positioned throughout the course.

The signature hole on the Ryder Cup course is number 13 - a par 4, 350-yard hole, requiring a tee shot to a small landing area and then an approach shot over water to an island green. Visit our Valhalla hole-by-hole course description for more.
