Pádraig Harrington has been a member of the European Ryder Cup team a total of four times – in 1999, when the USA defeated Europe, and with wins in 2002, 2004 and 2006. With his consistent high ranking on the European Ryder Cup Points and the World Ryder Cup Points lists, he may also join the team at the 2008 Ryder Cup Matches.

Pádraig Harrington has achieved the highest world ranking of any European golfer, with a sixth position in the Official World Golf Rankings. As well as playing professionally for the European Tour, he has played for the PGA Tour, winning the 2005 Honda Classic and, in 2007, The Open Championship at Carnoustie in Scotland.

Harrington has finished in the top 10 on the European Tour’s Order of Merit a total of seven times. In 2006, he won the Order of Merit.

Career Background

After several successes as an amateur player, Pádraig Harrington turned professional in 1995. He joined the European Tour in 1996 and, in the same year, won the Spanish Open. From 2000 on, he has earned an additional 11 wins on the European Tour.

Harrington played and won his first professional American event – the Target World Challenge, hosted by Tiger Woods – in 2002. In both 2003 and 2004, he was the runner-up in the Players Championship. He became a member of the PGA Tour in 2005, going on to beat Vijay Singh and Joe Ogilvie in a sudden death playoff at the Honda Classic. In the same year, he won the Barclays Classic by one stroke, with a 65-foot eagle putt on the final hole.

Pádraig Harrington has won the Irish PGA Championship a total of times, in 1998, 2004, 2005 and, most recently, in 2007.
