2008 Ryder Cup Matches | European Tour | Lee Westwood

Lee John Westwood was born 24 April 1973 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire. He started playing golf at the age of 13 – later than many professional golfers, but within two years had become the junior champion of Nottinghamshire. He went on to win the Peter McEvoy Trophy in 1990 and the British Youth Championship in 1993.

Three years after joining the professional ranks, he won his first professional tournament, the 1996 Volvo Scandinavian Masters. This was soon followed by the Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters in Japan. He defended his Japanese title in 1997 and went on to win the Volvo Masters in Spain and the Benson & Hedges Malaysian Open. He beat Greg Norman in an exciting playoff to conquer the Holden Australian Open. That year, he was also Nick Faldo‘s partner in the Ryder Cup Matches.

On the European Tour, Lee Westwood has won an impressive total of 18 events. He has also won in various tournaments in Australia, Africa, Asia, and North America. He peaked at 4th position in the Official World Golf Ranking. In 2000, he won seven tournaments worldwide and was ranked first on the European Order of Merit, bringing an end to Colin Montgomerie’s dominance of the European Tour.

In 2001 and 2002, Lee Westwood took a break from golf, following the birth of son Samuel Bevan. His return to victory came in 2003 in the BMW International Open in Germany. He was also a major contributor to Europe’s triumph in the 2004 Ryder Cup Matches.

In the 2007 season, Lee Westwood secured victories at the Valle Romano Open de Andalucia in Spain and the Quinn Direct British Masters. These successes have placed him among the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
