2008 Ryder Cup Matches | European Tour | Ian Poulter

Ian James Poulter was born in Hitchin on 10 January, 1976. He turned professional at the age of 18. He won the Open de Côte d’Ivoire on the second-tier Challenge Tour in 1999. He soon went on to take the Italian Open, and in 2000 was awarded the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year title.

Four more highly successful seasons followed, ending with Poulter’s capture of the 2004 Volvo Masters. He narrowly missed a place in the European Team for the 2001 Ryder Cup, but was a member of the winning squad in 2004. The following year he became a member of the PGA Tour.

In 2003, 2004 and 2006, Ian Poulter stayed in the top 10 on the European Order of Merit list. He has yet to claim any of the top world titles. Nevertheless, he is regarded as one of the best golfers in Europe, and has placed within the top 20 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Ian Poulter has been known for bringing a rather fiery personality onto the greens. In the 2006 Irish Open, he was fined for the verbal abuse of a marshal. The following year, he expressed frustration by smashing a tee marker – an act for which he faced a further fine. His bold way of dressing has likewise caught the attention of followers and critics alike.
